For example, if you have an abundance of branches on one particular side of the tree, then you will use pruning to get rid of the larger segments which weigh down the tree to one side. Think about it more in terms of maintaining rather than altering. While pruning is useful occasionally, most of the time you can use training as a healthier and more efficient alternative. 

Chopping down a tree by hand will take you forever, and will not even begin to be as accurate as using a chainsaw. If you don t have a chainsaw, you shouldn t even consider doing it without one. Ask around with your neighbors and see if anyone has one that you could borrow. If that doesn t work, rent one from your local store.
